VIN Inspection

I get a lot of questions about VIN Inspections, why they are needed, and where can one be obtained. So let’s start with the basics. What is a VIN inspection.

A VIN inspection is a physical inspection of the vehicle’s unique identification number for title and registration purposes. VIN inspections are required in Nevada for any vehicles or trailers which have never been registered or titled in the state of Nevada.

Okay now that we’ve gotten that out of the way here’s what you need to know. We all know that auto theft and fraud is something that happens all the time. Oftentimes fraudsters move vehicles across state lines in order to avoid detection. Quite a few states along with Nevada require an inspection of the vehicles VIN to make sure the vehicle hasn’t been reported stolen. Another reason for the VIN inspection is to check the consistency of the VIN’s located in various locations on the vehicle. Common points are inside the door frame, driver side windshield, and engine block.

A VIN inspection is also a great idea for those purchasing used cars from private parties. Sites like Craigslist, Facebook, and Offer UP are great places to find good deals on all kinds of items but as they say Buyer Beware. Sellers on these sites aren’t always as honest as they present themselves. A VIN inspection is a free service provided by the Nevada DMV and can be obtained in the parking lot of any Nevada DMV location.
